Which One to go for; E-commerce Or Dropshipping?

The Internet has made it simpler more than ever before to launch a new company. You can start selling a product or service online just with an idea, a supplier, and a website.

E-commerce refers to the business practice of selling products or services over the Internet. Most of us are familiar with the term and make frequent purchases through an e-commerce website or app, but fewer of us are aware that there are many kinds of e-commerce, dropshipping included. Continue reading to learn more about e-commerce and dropshipping.  E-commerce and dropshipping are two different business models that can be used to sell products online.

Both have their benefits and drawbacks, and which one is better for you will depend on your specific business goals and circumstances.

E-commerce refers to the sale of products or services through an online platform, such as a website or app. With an e-commerce business, you are responsible for sourcing and storing the products you sell, as well as handling fulfillment and shipping to customers. E-commerce can be a good option if you have a specific product or product line that you want to sell and have control over the entire process from start to finish.

Examples of E-commerce businesses include:

  • Amazon

  • Alibaba

  • JD.com

  • Wayfair

  • eBay

Dropshipping, on the other hand, is a fulfillment model where the retailer (you) doesn't keep any products in stock. Instead, when a customer places an order, the retailer passes the order and shipping details to a wholesaler or manufacturer, who then ships the product directly to the customer. As a dropshipper, you don't have to worry about storing or shipping products, but you also have less control over the fulfillment process and may not be able to offer the same level of personalization or branding as you could with an e-commerce business.

Examples of dropshipping companies include:

  • Gadgetox

  • Bluecrate

  • Inspire Uplift

Ultimately, which business model is better for you will depend on your goals and resources.

E-commerce may be a good option if you want to have more control over the product and fulfillment process and if you have the resources to handle storage and shipping. Dropshipping may be a good option if you want to get started with a business quickly and without a high-capital investment, or if you want to test the market for a product before committing to stocking it yourself.
